What Is Art Empowerment?
Art Empowerment is a trauma-informed approach to healing and personal growth that uses creative expression as a catalyst for transformation. As practiced by Dr. Matt — a Certified Facilitator with A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) — Art Empowerment sessions provide a safe, supportive space for individuals and groups to process experiences, build resilience, and reclaim their voices through art.
The AWBW Model
A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) is a nationally recognized leader in creativity and mental wellness. AWBW’s model is built on the belief that art is a human right and a powerful tool for healing. Their trauma-informed workshops are designed for people impacted by violence, trauma, or adversity, but are accessible to anyone seeking growth and self-discovery.
The AWBW Model is based on:
- Safety and Inclusion: Every individual session or group workshop is a judgment-free space, welcoming participants of all backgrounds and experiences.
- Strengths-Based Facilitation: The focus is on empowerment, agency, and honoring each person’s unique story. Come as the you that you are.
- No Art Experience Needed: The emphasis is on the process, not the product—everyone is invited to create, regardless of skill level. If you can make a mark on a piece of paper, dot an i or cross a t, you can participate and have a fun, meaningful, therapeutic experience.
- Community and Connection: Art Empowerment fosters connection, support, and hope, replacing isolation and shame with safety and possibility.
How Art Empowerment Works
Sessions and workshops typically include:
- Guided art activities using a variety of materials (painting, collage, drawing, mixed media, etc.)
- Breathing and grounding exercises to support self-regulation and presence
- Opportunities for reflection, sharing, and affirmation
- A focus on themes such as safety, boundaries, resilience, gratitude, and self-worth
Each session is structured to help participants express themselves authentically, process emotions, and discover new strengths. The goal is healing through creative action and community. With the advent of Telehealth and overhead cameras, now Art Empowerment is accessible to more people than ever.
Why Art Empowerment?
Research and experience show that creative expression can help release trauma, build resilience, and ignite personal and social change. Art Empowerment offers a window of time for healing—a chance to be seen, heard, and respected, and to move forward with greater confidence and hope.
